Heartland EMS System
The Heartland EMS System is a community-based 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation. Federal funding for emergency medical services ( EMS) stopped in 1981. State funding has been very limited and each year has been cut in Iowa allowing only limited reimbursement for training and no funds for equipment, vehicles or operation. Payment by Medicare and Medicaid for ambulance services are well below the actual cost of providing emergency care and medical transportation. A combination of no federal funding, no state funding, and below cost payment and write-offs by payors have placed EMS and medical transportation at the mercy of a combination of user fees and fundraising to meet budget needs.
Heartland EMS however continues to meet the medical transport needs of the handicap and elder population along with the transporting of critically ill and injured men, women, and children – all because it is needed, and it’s the right thing to do.
We’re not in this business to make money. All services are provided without regard to a patient’s financial situation, which means in any given year we will provide easily $210,000 in un-reimbursed care. Our equipment, given its specialized nature, is inherently expensive. But we are committed to providing the best care possible, no matter the cost.
That presents a phenomenal opportunity for individuals, corporations and foundations to have a significant impact. When a donation is made to Heartland EMS, the donor can immediately see the power of his or her generosity at work. Contributions help to:
- provide care for those without insurance and under insured;
- provide high quality equipment to our medical crews;
- make possible professional development opportunities to keep medical skills sharp;
- maintain an ambulatory/wheelchair shuttle program;
- keep our fleet of vehicles in optimum condition; and
- conduct research and expand on out-of-hospital care and treatment of ill and injured patients and support the enhancement of transport options in the Tri-States as it relates to critical care transport by ground and air.
Every dollar – large or small – makes a difference.
Contributors
100% of all contributions are granted to programs and to fund equipment and services in our community by Heartland EMS and their affiliate services.
Individuals and groups, small companies and large corporations are all contributors to the Heartland EMS System. There is no minimum donation amount.
Our success comes from those rich in their love for people and their belief that quality medical transport services should be available for all those in need.
All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
